7 Quick Takes Vol. 48 & February Challenge Day 14

— 1 —

Sorry St. Valentine, but the chocolates are happening over here. Thank you for giving us this holiday! And for being a Catholic beast. I should probably know more about you . . . I seriously love days when people focus on the good though. I think it’s silly how people turn it into a singles awareness day because that’s silly. Love is more than a boyfriend, people. Hope you all have a lovely day celebrating all the love in the world!

I was sick this week for the first time in a long time. It started on Monday night when I was getting ready for bed and just felt . . . bad. And then I woke up with a super bad stomach ache in the middle of the night. Tuesday I was achy and a lot of things just hurt and my temperature was 100.5 which I don’t know if that qualifies as a fever or not. I also didn’t really feel like eating or doing anything. TMI? But I made myself go to my 3 classes because hello I missed enough with the March for Life. But then I asked RRL’s VP to run the meeting scheduled for the night and spent most of the rest of the day laying on my bed, sleeping, and trying to get homework done. Thankfully I felt much better on Wednesday and back to normal yesterday.

They did a fabulous job with the meeting (where they were making valentines for seniors in town which we delivered yesterday). And they even made me a get well soon valentine which was really nice of them and I really appreciate. Gosh, I appreciate nice people 🙂

In a stroke of creativeness a couple days ago I decided to make valentines for my whole dorm (with my suitemates of course). Yes, we are crazy. But I really just felt like spreading the love and being nice! We made 19 of these (one for each suite of ladies) and hung them on the door last night. On the back we wrote something along the lines of

“To the beautiful ladies of Suite X: Happy Valentines Day! You are loved! ❤ Suite Y”

. . . and signed them all. Because we love people.

Be still my heart.

One thing I love about college is how spontaneous you can be. After reading this article yesterday, some friends and I decided to make the trek to the closest Chick-fil-A because it is just that good. Seriously, people! Chicken nuggets, waffle fries, and lemon aid all the way. I’d say it counted as a Valentines treat, right?

I had to share that because it’s hilarious. Hehe 🙂 Don’t worry, though. I’m spending the day with some lovely chicas, chocolate, and movies – no knitting and cats around here!

And now since I can’t really think of anything else to write about the day of luv, enjoy this child’s message which I’m sure many of us could agree with right now:

Laundry Detergent: Hippie Style

In recent months I’ve experimented with some homemade products in an effort to save money. But I also just really like making my own things and having things be more natural (though I’m totally not a hippie like I’ve been called 🙂 ).

At the end of last summer I did my own shampoo and conditioner using baking soda and apple cider vinegar (which are both dirt cheap). It worked really well and I was happy with it. But the water is so different at school that I stopped using it. I could definitely try it again in different ratios, but had bottles of regular shampoo and conditioner to finish up anyway.

I also made body wash using Olay bar soap which is divine. It smells lovely. And all you do is chop up the bar and dissolve it in water. At first I added too much water and it was too thin. So now I use less and it’s good. I bought a 2-pack of the bars for $3 and have only been using that since. I have enough to last me probably till the beginning of summer. See what I said?!?! Money saver!

My latest installment of hippie experiments comes in the form of laundry detergent. Doing just my own laundry is not very expensive since I’ve really cut back on my wardrobe and do about a load a week (unless I have lots of towels and linens). But I’ll take any kind of savings! Here’s what I did to make the detergent:

1. Buy this stuff

DSCN6008

All of them can be found in normal laundry aisles. Want an idea of the price? The Borax was $3.97, Super Washing Soda was $3.24, and the Zote soap was $0.97 for a grand total of $8.18. Read through a little more to see how that adds up to normal detergent.

2. Grate da soap

DSCN6006

From what I read online, many people opted to use the Fel-Naptha bar soap which apparently take out stains like a boss. And it’s yellow. How cute is that? This Zote bar sounded good to me at under a dollar for twice the amount of the other one. I forget how much FN was in store, but it was much more pricey for half the amount of soap . . . aaaaanyway. Zote smells slightly of lemon which is delightful (plus it’s easy to grate). I used half the bar.

3. Stir 1 cup Borax and 1 cup Washing Soda into le soap shreds.

DSCN6007

I dumped the soap into the dry stuff which made it kind of clumpish and lumpish, so I would recommend doing it the other way around. But just mix it real well and be sure to get an even amount in your scoop when you throw it in the washer.

4. Viola! Put in it an airtight container and you are set. Most people recommended that you use ~1T per load.

And now I’m laughing at myself because in writing this I found that I used twice the amount of soap I needed to.

Fail.

You actually only need 4.5 ounces of soap, and the giant bar is 14 oz. Now I’m off to go add more Borax and Washing Soda to the mix!

I did two loads of laundry with this to test it out and ohmygoodness I was so happy with it. My laundry has never felt cleaner, and it even smelled lovely (which was partly because of my dryer sheet . . .).

This recipe made a substantial amount which is going to last for months and I still have tons of Borax and Washing Soda, and enough soap for one two more batches. Let’s just say I was pretty excited about all this and my suitemates here thought it was a little lot weird to get so excited over weird awesome stuff. Weeeeell, I say, I’m the one saving money and having adventures making my own stuff.

There you have it! My latest adventure in homemade household items . . . have you ever done anything like this? Any recommendations for my next item to try making?

February Challenge Day 11: Traveling Adventure

Once upon a time several years ago my family was on a road trip. We were staying in South Dakota in the Hotel Alex Johnson (where a couple presidents have stayed). Our family split up into a couple rooms because it gets a little squishy fitting nine people into one room (not to mention that there are usually limits on the number of people, but rules were made to break, right?)

Three of my sisters and I got ourselves situated in our hotel room, and settled down after dinner. We turned on the tv, and lo and behold, American Idol was on. It’s not something I’ve ever followed, but singing is fun, right? Awesome.

We watched the last half of the episode, and all of us were rather jubilant over Scotty McCreery’s lovely voice (most of us like country music, and he wore a cross, how awesome was that?!). Then we got out a laptop, and started watching YouTube videos of his songs. And THEN we started singing along. It was loud. You get the picture :-)

Then came the knock on our door . . .  a hotel employee informed us that we needed to quiet down because a nearby patron had complained about our excessive level of jubilation (around 8 or 9pm). Alrightie then. We got quieter, and stifled our noise as we finished whatever videos we were watching. But whoever had complained must have been suffering from insomnia because they complained. Again. That time (around 11pm) we got a call from the front desk informing us that if we got one more complaint, we would be kicked out of the hotel. Nice, right?

We decided it would be a good idea to go to sleep after that phone call.

We later realized that there had been some party down the hall, and the light sleepers might have misplaced the noise and complained about the wrong people. Anyhow, that is the story of how my sisters and I were pretty close to getting kicked out of a hotel. The End.
